Overview

Wayfair Inc., the destination for all things home, aimed to enhance its agility and efficiency by migrating its complex, monolithic database to Google Cloud. This move was essential to support the company's rapid growth and to leverage data more effectively for improved customer experiences. To achieve this, Wayfair sought a partner experienced in cloud migrations and data transformations.

What we did

Pythian partnered with Wayfair to migrate their monolithic database to a microservices architecture on Google Cloud. Leveraging Pythian's expertise in Generative AI and cloud-native services, the project involved:

  • Migrating customer data from MS SQL to Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL.
  • Developing a GenAI toolkit using Vertex AI for automated code generation, which expedited the migration process.
  • Implementing a database-as-a-service (DBaaS) platform for faster provisioning of Spanner instances through a self-service flow.
  • Training Wayfair’s IT team on using the new tools and technologies effectively.

  • Cost Savings: The migration to Google Cloud resulted in millions of dollars saved over a multi-year spend.
  • Enhanced Customer Experience: 16% of customer traffic now enjoys a replatformed experience with 23% faster browsing speeds
  • Reduced Incidents and Fraud: The company spends 82% less time on major incidents and has seen a 30% reduction in fraud.
