Oracle

Hyper-scalable, multi-modal and a long-established standard in database management, Oracle remains to this day one of the most competitive options out there. Discover how Oracle Corporation and Pythian are committed to delivering continued innovation.

Oracle

Oracle Corporation has long been the established standard for multi-model database management. Ever since its initial release in the late 1970s, new features, tools, and other innovations have been delivered via regular updates to its namesake platform, Oracle. It is designed to be hyper-scalable and multi-modal, all while delivering industry-leading security, seamless integration, and more.

Oracle Corporation also has one of the most diverse and expansive product ranges, producing enterprise-grade application software, monitoring and management tools, and even operating systems such as dedicated Oracle-supported versions of Linux and Solaris. Multiple unique database engines are produced as well, including Oracle Enterprise MySQL and Essbase in addition to the primary Oracle database.

Oracle promotes the single-vendor solution for hardware, storage, networking, and software, including operating systems, databases, middle-tier, and various applications. This architecture, optimized for cloud connectivity and configured to suit a client’s specific processes, is paired with renowned 24x7x365 support, made possible by Pythian’s own internal certified Oracle experts. By combining the platform with the people who know it best, we can ensure constant system optimization, network monitoring, and performance that you can depend on.

Why Oracle Database?

Oracle Corporation has long been the market leader in relational databases. While most competitors provide only a limited subset of features, they deliver a comprehensive suite of tools and innovations that make it the relational database of choice for many. Since purchasing Sun Microsystems in January 2010, Oracle Corporation has positioned itself as an experienced hardware and software provider. This hardware, known as Engineered Systems, is meticulously optimized for associated, sustained workloads. Paired with low-level software that is equally efficient and well-optimized, clients experience a truly state-of-the-art system with ample power for when they need it–one that would be impossible to build independently.

With Oracle Corporation’s single-vendor approach, the middleman is cut out and clients benefit from direct interactivity with the manufacturer–for both hardware and software. The relationship between physical and digital efficiency is fortified and made more resilient as a result of this approach. Purchasing an entire stack has never been easier or more user-friendly: From the base hardware to the operating system, back-end database, and even application tiers, you can find it all with ease. In short, Oracle Corporation is a hassle-free and dependable choice for engineered hardware, software support, and single-vendor stack sourcing.

Oracle Database Features

The Oracle database delivers industry-leading concurrency and RDBMS scalability options for improved performance and resilience. It also enables horizontal scaling via features such as RAC, database native sharding and Global Data Services (GDS) in addition to vertical scaling with engineered systems such as those of the Oracle Exadata product line. Other featured advanced technologies include in-Memory and row-level in addition to columnar data stores, while industry-leading and unparalleled security options such as Oracle Database Vault ensures superior encryption and data protection.

In fact, even privileged Database Administrators can be restricted from unauthorized access of sensitive application data–nothing is left to chance. On top of all this, clients benefit from high availability via the Oracle Data Guard physical replication, which boosts security effectiveness even further. A logical form of replication, Oracle GoldenGate, is also widely available for your convenience.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure

Recently, Oracle has been promoting two varieties of their 2nd generation Cloud known as Oracle Cloud Infrastructure or “OCI”. The original, designed from the ground up to be highly performant and not over-subscribed is now known as OCI Classic. The newer, second-generation OCI delivers a wealth of enhancements to stability and user-friendliness. In fact, Oracle Corporation is the only provider that enables clients to officially run Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC) and Exadata hardware from within the cloud.

All of this means OCI clients have the ability to run more advanced database configurations when compared to other third-party cloud platforms. Plus, with rapid growth and adoption in many new regions around the world, you can expect OCI to remain an ever-optimized, ever-viable option. This is also evident in a recently announced partnership between Oracle Corporation and Microsoft, interconnecting Microsoft Azure and OCI clouds to deliver the best of both worlds.

Oracle 19c

Oracle 19c, the newest database release, focuses heavily on ease of management and automation both in the Oracle Cloud and on-premises. This latest version builds on a long history of high availability and disaster recovery technologies with continual enhancements, most notably with “pluggable database” related improvement. At the same time, it simplifies administration with newer and more automated upgrade options in addition to performance features such as the new automatic index system. In fact, even software installation is simpler than ever with Oracle 19c; underpinning tasks such as installations, patching, and upgrades can be further simplified or bypassed altogether using Oracle 18c and 19c in conjunction with Oracle’s Cloud offering, OCI. This cloud-based platform features managed database services including the Autonomous Database (ADB).

Migrate to/from Oracle

Oracle provides a robust number of migration options and flexibility to meet almost any need, and clients also benefit from industry-leading support at their beck and call should the need arise. The Oracle database is commercial software with standard license fees in addition to maintenance and support-associated costs. Should the Oracle estate be a comparatively smaller subset of the overall estate, then standardization via another platform could lead to simple, effective support and reduced operational expenses. Additionally, the Oracle database is undoubtedly more robust and complicated than any alternative platform. But if all that’s needed is the simpler basics or, more realistically, just a slightly reduced subset of the functionality, then an alternative platform might meet those needs.

Pythian is happy to perform a comprehensive audit to determine which of these platforms is best suited to your operations. We’ll help develop and execute the most appropriate migration for your company’s needs.
